Obergurgl developed more and more from the middle of the 20th century into the unique holiday resort that it still is today.

WINTER HOLIDAYS AWAY FROM THE SLOPES
A winter holiday in Obergurgl has much more to offer. How about a leisurely toboggan trip, ideally combined with an eventful evening spent in a mountain hut? If you are looking for complete tranquillity and solitude for a few hours, then you should go out and explore the surrounding area on snowshoes. There are of course also numerous winter hiking trails that will whisk you away to the nearby Swiss stone pine forest. Cross-country skiers will also find enjoyment on all levels in Obergurgl. Or do you fancy a guided ski tour to one of the many three thousand metre peaks? OBERGURGL – MORE THAN JUST A WINTER SPORTS RESORT
Obergurgl is more than "just" skiing, snow and mountains. There are also wonderful buildings and architectural highlights in this unique mountain village situated in the Ötz Valley. The parish church of St. John of Nepomuk deserves a special mention. It is not only that this beautiful church was expanded in 1924 by the famous architect Clemens Holzmeister to include a gallery bay and a side chapel, Obergurgl is also the highest parish village in Austria. Nowhere else can you get as close to the skies as here in Obergurgl. And if you have an interest in unique buildings, you shouldn't miss the Piccard monument. This commemorates the emergency landing and rescue of Auguste Piccard, who had to make an emergency landing on the Gurgler Glacier on May 27th, 1931, after having set a new altitude record with his balloon, and spend a night there in the snow before he was finally rescued.
